HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PAIR OF BOXING GLOVES

The first decision is not size, but purpose. Bag gloves are built for bag and mitt work, while sparring gloves are made for partner training. Training gloves cover general gym use, and fight gloves are reserved for competition. Never spar in a dedicated bag glove unless the manufacturer specifically allows it.

Once the purpose is clear, choose the weight. Most adults use 10-14 oz gloves for bags and mitts, while 16 oz is standard for sparring at many gyms. Larger fighters may need 16-18 oz, while lighter fighters may use 14 oz if their gym allows it. Competition rules are separate from training guidelines.

Fit varies by brand and model, so check the product’s size chart before ordering. Gloves should feel snug with hand wraps on without pinching your fingers.

The final choice is between lace-up and hook-and-loop closures. Lace-up gloves allow more precise tightening but usually require help. Hook-and-loop (Velcro) gloves are easier to use alone, making them the practical choice for everyday training.

For training that includes kicks and clinch work, shop our Muay Thai gloves. For grappling and open-hand techniques, see our MMA gloves.

FAQS

How much do boxing gloves cost?

Boxing gloves at Fighters Shop start around $50. Premium leather and professional sparring gloves can cost more than $250, depending on the brand, materials, and construction.

What size boxing gloves should a beginner buy?

For bag work and mitts, 12 oz or 14 oz is a solid starting point for most adults. For sparring, many gyms require 16 oz gloves. Always follow your gym or coach’s requirements.

What’s the difference between training and sparring gloves?

Training gloves are made for general bag work, mitts, and drills. Sparring gloves use softer padding designed for partner training. If you spar regularly, use dedicated sparring gloves.

Do I need hand wraps under boxing gloves?

Yes. Hand wraps support your wrists, protect your knuckles, and improve the fit inside your gloves. Wear them every time you train.

Should I choose lace-up or hook-and-loop boxing gloves?

Lace-up gloves provide a tighter, more adjustable fit but usually require help to put on. Hook-and-loop gloves are faster and easier to use alone, making them the practical choice for everyday training.
